Photo-facial or Photo-rejuvenation is a skin treatment procedure which uses intense pulsed lights, lasers or any other light-based tech.

Photo-facials are used in a number of ways. It’s most common uses are in curing and boosting collagen proteins, healing brown spots, treating broken calipers and reducing or eliminating acne.
Nowadays, there are two types of technologies used mainly for photo-facials.

They are:
• IPL (intense pulsed light) Photo-facial and
• LED (light emitting diode) Photo-facial.

1. IPL (intense pulsed light) Photo-facial:
IPL Photo-facials are said to be the best age reducing non-surgical treatment available in the dermatological faculty. In this procedure, high energy light beams are utilized in treating a great variety of different skin conditions. It is mainly used in treating scar marks, broken calipers, spider veins, birth marks, freckles, sun burns and even facial redness due to Rosacea.

The final result of this treatment is that the patient’s skin looks younger and rejuvenated. The whole process is claimed to take around 30 minutes in which the laser penetrates deep into the skin and causes the blood vessels and collagen under the epidermis to contract, which reduces the skin’s redness and aging. The cells which are broken down, may burn and turn brown after the procedure, but they eventually flake off from the skin.

The intense pulsed light may cause fibroblast cells to produce more collagen. The boosted collagen will make the skin look younger and tighter.

Even so, this procedure does come with its discomforts. The patients may experience a light burn on their skin which is most likely like a normal sun burn. The skin may swell up, look flushed, and may even have a slight burning sensation.

For optimum results, the treatment is to be carried out for 2-3 months on regular 1-2 week intervals.

2. LED (light emitting diode) Photo-facial:
The second most popular Photo-facial involves LED technology which is the simpler and harmless counterpart of the IPL Photo-facial. The LED Photo-facial uses a narrow beam of infrared and red lights which will not at all irritate the patient’s skin. The Blue LED light treatment is used to eliminate the bacteria which cause acne on the face. The red and infrared light is used in the same way IPL lasers are used, i.e. the light is capable of penetrating deep into the skin and stimulates collagen production which makes the skin more elastic and reduces wrinkles on one’s skin.

This Photo-facial is cool and relaxing while also carrying no risks of skin burning, irritation or swelling. The best results can be seen after a proper series of Photo-facial sessions. These sessions consist of about 6 treatments with 1-2 week intervals in between them. This type of Photo-facial is usually found in day spas and common skin care salons.

Conclusion:
Both the facials are non-surgical skin treatments which offer immediate results to its patients. Both the facials have their good and bad points and one must consider carefully before having either of them done and only have them done by a professional practitioner.
