An overview: What are Dermal Fillers ?

About dermal fillers

Dermal Fillers
Botox can smooth wrinkles out.
Dermal fillers are substances that are injectable and used to help in plumping and firming up aging skin. Dermal fillers are also used for smoothing wrinkles and filling in facial lines. They correct the recessed scars and give your face the desired rejuvenation. They are most commonly used for the plumping of the lips and to take away those creases that may be present in the eyebrow area. Such injections are the best alternative to facelifts for patients who desire a fresher and younger look but do not want to meet the costs as well as the time required to recover from the surgical procedures

What are the reasons for getting them?
When we are getting older, there are things that affect how we age and how we look, including:
• exposure to the sun
• diet
• genetics
• gravity

These things take their toll on us and over time it begins to show well on our faces. The fat, elastic, and collagen in our faces break down making our faces become tired looking and possible gaunt. Wrinkles slowly start to appear in some areas, especially the expression muscle areas. The nasolabial area is most affected, running from the mouth corners up to our chines. Wrinkles in between the eyebrows are also quite common.

Fillers help in “filling” in the sunken and creased areas to make your face look youthful and energized. The results that the fillers help us achieve aren’t permanent, and if you don’t feel they work for you, you just stop the treatment. For people who want to get a younger look without surgery, this is the right solution for you.

The kinds of dermal fillers available
Different dermal fillers have different ingredients. A surgeon is the best person to help in the selection process, as they know how each works and the look that will be achieved. The types of dermal fillers that are most common include, hyaluronic acid, collagen and fat. Each of these is adequate for a year or so, after which you will need to go back for treatment.

Human Fat – Fat Transfer
Human fat can sometimes be used in such filler injections and it is analogous as it comes from your body. The surgeon takes fat from areas like the thighs or abdomen and then cleans it so as to inject it to the spots that you want on the face. The choice is a good one if you have some severe allergies. There is no way that your body can react to its own tissues. The body reabsorbs a percentage of the fat injected meaning that the injection site has to be overfilled initially. The area injected may look a bit swollen for some days until the excess fat is reabsorbed.

Collagen
This is the protein present in different cow products as well as the skin of humans. It can be used for the purposes of plumping up the lips. This can also be applied on moderate face creases so as to counteract the way they look. This is an excellent option for the people who want to maintain the appearance especially after facelifts and other facial surgeries.

Hyaluronic Acid
This is a substance that occurs naturally in humans in the connective tissues and on the eye area. When injected, it inflates tissues and draws water to the skin surface making you look younger.

Tips to Recover After Plastic Surgery Procedure

Plastic Surgery Recovery
Plastic Surgery Recovery – How to Make it Easier
Any surgery, even a plastic surgery, is a serious procedure and patients who take their health seriously should be well prepared for the recovery process. Once the procedure is complete, there are some things that you can do to help in the recovery process. It is my belief that being mentally prepared for such things can help you heal faster. These tips will help you have fewer complications and can help mitigate pain after the surgery.

Getting home after surgery
After the surgery, you need to get a ride home. It is important to have someone with you for 24-72 hours after the surgery. This allows you to recuperate well and rest. The other person should help with preparing food and making sure that you are comfortable at all times as you recover.

What to expect
It is important to know that a majority of the patients experience some forms of mild depression after a plastic surgery procedure. For this reason, it is very important that you relax after the surgery. It is rare but people do have periods where they may feel the pain of bruising, the pain of the swelling and it affects one’s mindset. Know that this is only temporary and you’ll soon be on the road to recovery.

After the surgery, you will receive some post-operative instructions from the doctor. Always make sure that you follow them to the letter. Pain medication and antibiotics are some of the drugs that may be prescribed to you.

How to deal with the sun
You will need to protect the skin from direct sunlight once you are ready to go outside. A good sunscreen can be very helpful, especially one that has a SPF of 15. Stay away from the sun as much as you can and don’t go outside without protecting yourself. Exposure to the sun may make the healing process slower and make those scars become more apparent.

So as to recuperate well, you mayt need to be off for work for a few weeks so that you can stay home and heal. The surgery may make you qualify for a short term disability if an extended period for recovery is required.

Before the surgery
This is important – prepare for your recovery after your surgery – before the surgery. Stock the house with food before the surgery. Always do the laundry and all cleaning that you may want done before you have the surgery. Pay all the bills and make sure you arrange some activities that will help you relax and keep you busy during recovery.

Try not to lift heavy things, clean the house, fix the car or any strenuous activities after the surgery as the tissues and the muscles need adequate time to heal. Strenuous activities need to be avoided by all means until that time when the doctor indicates that you are indeed ready.
Making yourself comfortable and reducing pain.

You will also need enough blankets and pillows around. Extra pillows may be used under the head as you sleep. You can also use a pillow between the knees and against the stomach. The pillows are meant to keep you as comfortable as possible as you sleep.

To minimize pain and swelling, use ice packs. Gel packs, as well as frozen fruit and vegetable bags, can also be used. These bags should be applied to all affected areas for a duration of 15 minutes so as to get the best results. Always take some breaks when you are doing this.

FYI -Smoking may delay the process of healing. Avoid it at all cost. Don’t smoke for three weeks after and before such a surgery.

Skin Tightening Laser Treatment- a Non-Surgical Method for Younger Looking Skin

As we age our skin gradually loses its elasticity and no matter how hard we work out or try to stay fit our skin weakens. A few years ago surgical liposuction and plastic surgeries were the only viable solutions to tighten up loose or sagging skin. But now, due to new scientific innovations and technical advancements, a non surgical alternative was discovered. A Skin Tightening Laser Treatment regiment was tested and approved for use on patients.

What is a Skin Tightening Laser?
A skin tightening laser is a device which uses an Infrared beam to tighten the skin by heating up the collagen protein which lies deep within the skin near the dermis. The protein is heated up to a certain temperature and starts to thicken and contract. The skin responds to the burn wounds and stimulates the growth of new cells which then replace the damaged cells.

The laser can be used on any part of the body and the patient does not have to have any “downtime” after receiving treatment from it. The treatment procedure will take 3-4 months with a laser treatment after every 2-4 week intervals.

Because of the growth stimulation of new collagen, a visibly faster result is seen in the patients’ skin and the patient experiences a smoother and softer feel to their skin which radiates a more youthful impression.

Preparations before sessions
The patient is advised to apply sun-block and keep away from direct sunlight 3-4 weeks before the laser treatment sessions. The practitioner will also advise you to stop tretinoin-treatments a week before the sessions.

What happens during a laser skin tightening session?
Before the session, the patient has to remove all types of make-up applications from their skin. The practitioner will then apply an anesthetic ointment on the to-be treated area. For those who cannot stand the mild discomfort, they can take pain medications prior the session.

Only highly trained professionals may use and operate the skin laser hand-piece. The practitioner will use the hand-piece to apply brief laser energy pulses to the patient’s skin. The hand-piece will also shoot out continuous bursts of cool air onto the skin to ease the burning sensation. Most laser systems will have the practitioner go through the treated area three times to achieve the most optimum results. A normal session will last from 30 minutes to an hour which depends on the size and area of the treated skin.

There is no downtime after the sessions and the patient can return to their daily lives right after the treatment.

After the Laser sessions
An immediate change in their skin will be experienced by the patient after the treatment. The patients may feel some discomfort like a burning sensation, tightened skin or red skin which will go away within 48 hours after the treatment. A full skin renewal will be experienced after 90 to 180 days of treatment. The skin will stay in this state for 1 or 2 years. This can be prolonged if one avoids going out in the sun and uses high SPF sun blocks if a need does arise to go outside.

Some rare complications after the sessions
• Bruising
• Blisters
• Swelling on the treated area
• Skin Redness and
• Pigmentation on the treated area
