An Insight about General Dermatology

Dermatology

Our skin is the largest organ of our bodies and comprises about 16% of the total weight of the body. Healthy skin, healthy hair and nails are also a good sign that you have a healthy body.

Dermatology and Dermatologists
Dermatology is a branch of medical science which deals with the treatment of skin, hair and nail diseases. Dermatologists treat dermatological problems both medically and surgically.

Ailments and diseases like acne, sun burns, blemishes, black spots, rashes, skin cancer, hair loss, bald patches, etc., can be cured by dermatologists. On average, a dermatologist can identify and prescribe medication for over 3,000 different skin, hair and nail ailments. But even so, not all dermatologists specialize entirely in the vast field.

There are three major types in the field. They are:
• Cosmetic Dermatology
• Medical Dermatology and
• Surgical dermatology

Cosmetic Dermatology usually focuses the aesthetic side of the skin. It does not dig deep into medical reasons and irregularities, however it only takes into account how the skin looks. Patients usually consult Cosmetic Dermatologists to cure and get rid of unappealing blemishes, rashes, un-even skin tones, anti-aging procedures or sun burns.

Medical Dermatology usually takes medical conditions of the skin, like skin cancer, into consideration. It is the total opposite of cosmetic dermatology, as skin appearance plays a very small role in its diagnosis. Medical Dermatologists usually take up, diagnose, and treat more severe skin ailments, like infectious rashes and severe sun burns. They also treat lupus, skin cancer, or melanoma.

Surgical dermatology, just like its name suggests, refers to the treatment of skin, hair and nail ailments, using surgical methods and procedures. Surgical dermatology sometimes overlaps cosmetic dermatology, as some surgeries are for cosmetic purposes, like facelifts. Such procedures can be done by specialized dermatologists.

Even if cosmetic dermatology, medical dermatology, and surgical dermatology, are definite in their own terms, they also overlap often to provide a mixed treatment to respective patients.
